GIF MovieI spent quite a bit of time, learned a lot, and had a lot of fun making this animated GIF movie in GIMP. I'd originally imagined using it as an icon, but to my dismay it's impossible to make anything resembling a movie, even in greyscale, that will come in under the 40k user icon file-size limit.

Still, I'm extremely amused by this.

GIMP should allow you to control dithering and color depth, and partial frames, and so on. If not, you can use gifsicle.

$ gifsicle --resize-height 100 --optimize=2 --colors 5 cham.gif > cham2.gif

I resized it to 83x100, because I think the max size for an LJ icon is 100x100. Unfortunately it's illegible that way. If I left it at 100x120, I had to reduce color depth to 3, which ruined the picture.

erm, point being; that animation could be probably be done reasonably well, even under 40K. My crude attempt above is 37K.

If it worked from a pre-resized gif, it would look a lot better.

I used to do this sort of thing when 14.4 modems were considered fast.

I haven't been able to figure out how GIMP exposes the optimisation options, yet.

Hmm. I was originally going to crop it to 100x100, so let me try that and then see what gifsicle can do for me...

Ah, excellent. I had to go down to four colours, though, since apparently the 40k limit assumes 1k = 1000.
